High Highs and Low Lows

Song of the Week - Life on Mars by David Bowie

According to an interview with Bowie, this song is about a sensitive young woman: "I think she finds herself disappointed with reality... that although she's living in the doldrums of reality, she's being told that there's a far greater life somewhere, and she's bitterly disappointed that she doesn't have access to it."
The Long Form - The Opposite of the Space Race

We all know, or at least most of us agree, that humans landed on the moon in 1969, but did you know we were also racing to the depths of our oceans around the same time as we looked wistfully into space?

We got low before we got high. Humanity reached the Challenger Deep - the deepest part of the Mariana Trench - in January of 1960, almost a full decade before we landed on the moon. Sure, an American orbited the Earth in 1962, and the Soviets launched the first human into space in 1957, but if it's about touchdowns on new territory, then it looks like it was decidedly easier to withstand the pressure of sinking than the pressure of lift off.

So, not to put too fine of a point on it, but this feels like a pretty good analogy for the current state of the cannabis industry. We're all very excited about the new territory of weed, but it seems that the forces of the universe need us to experience some lows before we breakthrough the clouds.

It's been a tough few weeks, both behind the scenes and on the retail floor. Producers are having a hard time selling products for many reasons, retailers are having a hard time getting products for many reasons, customers are just having a hard time in general. Doesn't this all just feel -SO- January?

The bright side is that if history has taught us anything, it's that sometimes it's going to feel like we're really low before we reach those heights that we've been promised. Cannabis-growing companies that make it through 2020 are surely the ticket that will take us to the moon.
The News: $125,000 of Cannabis Seized in Bust

It's a nuance of Canadian geography and provincial structure that causes drug bust headlines to occur fairly often in Northwestern Ontario. Maybe it's a case of 'friendly' competition between police forces, as the Manitoba border is where the RCMP and OPP jurisdictions meet. Any time I'm driving the stretch of high way from Winnipeg to Dryden, I'm almost guaranteed to see a vehicle pulled over and in the process of being searched. Yet, if you don't hit up a dispensary in Winnipeg, you won't find another one until you hit Sudbury.
